Gutters in Spencer, Hung on Solid Wood and Pitched Right

We repair and replace gutters on homes in Spencer and nearby towns. On older houses that means checking the fascia board, the old hangers and where the downspouts drain before we hang anything new. You get water moving away from your home, not behind the gutter.

What gutter work fixes, and when it's the right call

Gutters have one job. Catch the water off the roof and put it somewhere it can't hurt your home. When they sag, leak at the seams or overflow, that water ends up in the fascia, the siding, the soffit and the soil next to your foundation.

On older houses the gutter is rarely the only problem. We often find steel gutters held up with spikes that have worked loose, a fascia board that's soft behind them, or a downspout that drains straight into a bed against the wall. Some houses have had three rounds of caulk and tar patches. We look at all of it so the new gutters have something solid to hang on.

Sometimes a repair is enough. Resealing a corner or rehanging one run can buy years. If the system is rusted through or too small for the roof, we'll say so plainly. With 30+ years of roofing experience behind us, we've seen most of what an old gutter line can hide.

What our gutter work includes

Fascia and soffit check

Before new gutters go up, we probe the fascia board along every run. Soft or rotted sections get replaced so the hangers bite into sound wood.

Gutters sized for your roof

Many older homes have narrow gutters that can't keep up with a hard Oklahoma downpour. We look at roof area and pitch, then recommend a gutter size and downspout count that can handle it.

Continuous runs, screwed hangers

We form gutters to length on site, so each run is one piece with joints only at the corners. Hidden hangers go in at close spacing and are fastened with screws, not the old spike-and-ferrule setup that loosens over time.

Correct slope and clean outlets

Each run gets a slight fall toward the downspout so water doesn't sit. Outlets are cut clean and sealed.

Downspouts that drain away

Downspouts go where they make sense, with extensions or splash blocks that carry water out from the foundation instead of dropping it beside the wall.

Repairs and old patch cleanup

For gutters worth keeping, we reseal seams and corners, rehang sagging sections and scrape off old tar patches that trap water and rust the metal.

Signs your gutters need work

Water spilling over the front
If water sheets over the edge when it rains, the gutter is clogged, pitched wrong or too small. Over time that water digs a trench in the bed below.
Sagging or pulling away
A gutter that leans out from the house usually means loose hangers or soft fascia. Both get worse with every storm.
Peeling paint and streaked siding
Stains below the gutter or paint flaking off the fascia point to a leak or overflow that has been going on for a while.
Rust and lumps of old caulk
Rust spots on steel gutters, or globs of caulk and tar at the corners, tell us someone has been nursing an old system along.
Puddles by the foundation
Standing water near the wall after rain often traces back to a downspout that ends too close to the house.

How a gutter job goes

  1. 1

    We look first

We walk around your home and check the fascia, the roof edge and the drainage. We take photos of what we find and go over them with you.

  2. 2

    You get a written estimate

The estimate lists the gutter work, any wood repair and the downspout plan line by line. If a repair will do, that's what we price.

  3. 3

    Old gutters come down

On the work day we take down the old gutters, pull the spikes and hangers, and replace any bad fascia. Ladders get pads or stand-offs so we don't dent the roof edge.

  4. 4

    New gutters go up

Gutters are formed, hung, sloped and sealed. We run water through every run before we call it done.

  5. 5

    Cleanup and walk-around

We haul off the old metal, pick up screws and scraps, and walk the house with you so you can see the finished work.

What sets the cost of a gutter job

Your price depends mostly on the length of gutter your home needs and the condition of the wood it hangs on. Fascia problems hide behind the old metal, so we look closely before we write a number down. Each part of the job gets its own line on the estimate.

Length of the runs
Total feet of gutter and the number of corners drive most of the cost. More corners mean more cutting and sealing.
Fascia and wood repair
Rotted fascia is common on older homes and adds labor and material. We show you photos of any bad wood before it goes into the price.
Height and access
A two-story wall, a sloped lot or a roof over a deck takes more setup than a single-story ranch.
Gutter size and downspouts
Wider gutters and extra downspouts cost more up front but handle heavy rain much better.
Repair or replace
Resealing a few seams and rehanging a run costs far less than a new system. We'll tell you which one your home actually needs.

Gutter questions we hear

Can you fix my old gutters instead of replacing them?
Often, yes. If the metal is sound and the size is right, we can reseal seams, rehang low spots and add a downspout. If it's rusted through or too small for the roof, patching it again usually just moves the leak.
Why does the fascia matter so much?
The gutter hangs on the fascia board. If that wood is soft, new hangers have nothing to hold, and the gutter will sag within a season or two. That's why we check it first and replace bad sections before hanging anything.
Should I do gutters at the same time as a new roof?
It often makes sense. During a roof replacement the drip edge is replaced too, and new gutters can be set to work with it. If your gutters are still in good shape, we can leave them up and protect them during the roof work.
Did the last storm damage my gutters?
Hail can dent gutters and downspouts, and strong wind can pull runs loose. We'll look and photograph what we find so you have it if you talk to your insurance company. Our storm damage repair page covers the roof side of that.
Who stands behind the work?
We do. We'll go over what's covered for your gutter job before any work starts, and you're welcome to ask about it when you call.
